Then run the output of your last in the chain to a line input on your audio interface. I’m using an ART Pro MPA II RS as preamp and an audiobox VSL 1818 as interface. When I use my preamp I wanna bypass the pre of the audiobox itself.

Some interfaces have a combo connection that allows you to plug in XLR cables and TRS cables in the same input. If this is the case, you’ll likely have a switch that tells the interface that you want to use Mic or Line level on that input. Keep in mind that Line inputs are different than Instrument inputs although both use a 1/4 connection. I’ve also found the preamp is much cleaner than my digital audio interface when cranking things to higher levels. I tend to set my gain/output higher on this and my interface levels on the lower end.

This preamp has 40 db of gain per channel and out tatoueur versailles put of about 10. There is a 20 db of added gain you can access by pressing the button in that would bring it to a total of 70 db , however there is some hissing due to the X tubes. Now depending on your use , as an instrument pre it would not present, but here is where I will tell you how to transform this machine to a very goo vocal/mic preamp.

I rack with the screws against the ct of the Capeau pramp empch me back correctly. Therefore obliged to unscrew the rack and revise them later, just as galre manip. A slightly damp cleaning cloth or soft, dust-free cloth works best to remove fingerprints.

Most of your gain will happen with your outboard pre. The 003 will simply amplify an already boosted signal, it’s pretty minimal. I went through the whole post and still am confused on LINE et and MIC input… I use a Golden Age Pre73 preamp through a M-Audio Fast Track ultra 8R interface. Unity gain on a mixer means the signal is unaffected. An affordable 2-channel preamp with quality A to D conversion. MPA II before the +4/-10 switch but after the output level control.

There was an immediate and very nice change to the overall gain and sensitivity. The sound was fuller and very pleasing on a Martin acoustic and vocal tracks. RCA black-plate 12AT7; Silky, analog sound with deep mids, airy highs, and a warm tone overall. Sylvania long-plate; similar to the GE long-plate but tighter and with a little more bite in the top-end. A real versatile tube that is somewhat of a sleeper and offers a lot for the money. GE long-plate; Big smooth sound with some focus on the low-end and lots of harmonic richness in the midrange.

After connecting your Channel Strip to the interface, set that interface’s input to LINE. You might have to check your manual to see what volume the gain on the interface needs to be for Unity for line level signals. Then you control the gain on your preamp as you check the input level on your DAW. A lot of audio interfaces that accept line level sources need their volume knob up about 30% of the way to be at unity gain. But most of the gain is coming from your VTB1, since that is the preamp.

ALL Mid/Side decoders have TWO inputs — “Mid” (for the forward-facing cardioid or bi-di) & “Side” (for the sideways-facing bi-di) and TWO outputs “Left” and “Right”. You plug your forward-facing mic into input 1 and your figure 8 into input 2 . The decoder then sums the in-phase signal from the bi-di with the Mid to create the left output and sums the out-of-phase signal from the bi-di with the Mid to create the right output. BTW, this is also how dual-channel pre’s like the True Audio P1 and consoles like Sony’s DMX-R100 (and virtually all M/S decoders) do so. The beauty of the tube preamp – one can improve/modify the tone by simply replacing the tubes.

Not only that, the tubes are easy to replace, should you wish to alter the tone of the MPA II . First I want to say how glad I am that Sweetwater offers a variety of preamps at affordable prices and their staff are very helpful in walking you through the selection process. In fact I can’t think of a thing I’ve purchased from them that I haven’t been satisfied with, until the purchase in 2016 of the ART PRO MPA ii.

Lexicon dont have any bypass possible… the only option ….set my input gain @ 0 but its not a ”true bypass” .. You don’t need a preamp to improve your sound. Better mic placement, and performance can do that. You want to line level because after a mic pre, the signal has been amplified to line level instead of mic level. Going into another mic level stage would mean MORE gain added for no reason. P-power is phantom power, it is what you need to use condenser microphones.
